American Reckoning

In the Judeo-Christian Tradition, reckoning is used throughout the Old and New Testament. It denotes the settling of accounts. Reckoning can be defined as a call to action- to take an inventory. Paul uses the Greek word logizomai many times in Romans.

In the 12 Step Tradition of AA, Step 4 speaks to this reckoning and invites us to take a “fearless moral inventory”, to dig deep into one’s past, to shine a light into the darkest corner, to make amends to those who have been wronged and maligned by our actions.  It is an essential step in moving forward in recovery, for an individual, people or for a nation.

In ‘American Reckoning’, I have intentionally leaned into exhausted and familiar symbols and bathed them in a fading, monochromatic nicotine haze.

May the American Reckoning begin.
